Virtual Network Computing (VNC) is a remote access tool and protocol for macOS screen-sharing (remote desktop).

  • the Mac alternative to RDP for remote desktop functionality

  • not all versions support connection encryption
    • Secure connection with VPN

Screen Sharing is the macOS remote desktop feature that uses the VNC protocol.

  • can use any VNC client to connect to a Screen Sharing server
  • encrypted
