Pretexting is a social engineering tactic where threat actor(s) will communicate, whether directly or indirectly, a lie or half-truth in order to get someone to believe a falsehood.

• e.g., using a carefully crafted story
  • attackers use a fake identity and create believable scenarios that convince their targets to give up sensitive information or perform actions they wouldn’t normally do for strangers
  • attacker creates a false story or scenario to deceive the victim
