Keyboard and Security Component Replacement

  • components such as the keyboard, touch pad, and biometric sensors can easily be damaged
    • bc they are mechanical components
  • can be more cost-effective to replace damaged components than buy a new laptop

Keyboard and Touchpad Replacement

  • When you are replacing components such as the keyboard and touchpad
    • almost always need to use the same part as was fitted originally
  • Each part connects to the motherboard via a data cable
    • typically a flat ribbon type
    • cable is held in place by a latch that must be released before trying to remove the cable and secured after insertion
  • When replacing an input device, use the OS/driver settings utility or app to configure it
    • keyboard should be set to the correct input region

Key Replacement

  • might be economical to lift a single key for cleaning or replacement
    • pry off the plastic key cap with a flat blade to expose the retainer clip
    • retainer clip can also be removed for cleaning
      • is fragile
    • line up each component carefully and then push to snap it back into place

Biometric Security Components

  • On a laptop, biometric sensors are typically implemented as a fingerprint scanner
    • camera can also be used to make facial scans or to scan an iris eye patter
    • fingerprint sensor might be installed as a separate component or might be a feature of the keyboard or touchpad
  • fingerprint reader board is attached to the motherboard by a flat ribbon cable in the same way as the keyboard and touchpad

Near-field Scanner

  • near-field communication (NFC) scanner on a laptop is primarily used to pair peripheral devices or to establish a connection to a smartphone
  • might be implemented as a feature of the keyboard, touchpad, or fingerprint reader
  • NFC sensor must be connected to the motherboard and its antenna
