Driver’s Privacy Protection Act (1994)
- requires states to protect the privacy of personal information contained in motor vehicle records
- Protected information includes any personal data in the record:
- such as the driver’s name, address, phone number, SSN, driver’s license identification number, photograph, height, weight, sex, and date of birth
- One of the reasons for introducing the Act was the 1989 murder of a California actor
- A stalker obtained the actor’s address from the California Department of Motor Vehicles
- then later went to the actor’s home and killed her
