Driver’s Privacy Protection Act (1994)


  • requires states to protect the privacy of personal information contained in motor vehicle records
  • Protected information includes any personal data in the record:
    • such as the driver’s name, address, phone number, SSN, driver’s license identification number, photograph, height, weight, sex, and date of birth
  • One of the reasons for introducing the Act was the 1989 murder of a California actor
    • A stalker obtained the actor’s address from the California Department of Motor Vehicles
    • then later went to the actor’s home and killed her
