Datacenter Power Resilience

  • Datacenter needs to have reliable and sufficient power
  • considerations:
    • Connect datacenter to multiple grids
    • Distinct physical pathways for power
      • utilities should not have a single point of failure
    • Sufficient power for the expected load of the datacenter
      • need to have the appropriate infrastructure in the region to support
  • Power infrastructure for the datacenter itself is important
    • Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) that provide battery-based or flywheel-based power during power outages
    • Generators for power during longer outages
      • need to be sufficiently powerful
      • deploy in redundant designs
        • avoid single point of failure
        • allow for maintenance
      • need fuel during disasters
        • sign contracts to ensure priority fuel delivery during disaster events
        • use multiple contracts to avoid dependence on single supplier
